Duong Dong, Dinh Cau & the Night Market

The island’s main town, its sea shrine and its seafood stalls

Duong Dong is Phu Quoc’s main town, set around the mouth of the Duong Dong river on the west coast. It is busy, practical and not especially pretty, but it is where the island’s everyday life happens: the morning market, the fishing boats moored along the river, and the shops, cafés and restaurants that serve both locals and visitors.

At the river mouth, on a rocky outcrop, stands Dinh Cau, a small shrine and lighthouse where fishermen pray for safe voyages and good catches. A few minutes’ walk inland, the night market fills every evening with seafood stalls, grilled snacks, fruit, ice cream rolls and souvenirs such as pearls and pepper. Newer evening markets aimed at visitors have also opened elsewhere on the island, but this is the classic one.
