Most visitors arrive by air at Phu Quoc International Airport, a short drive from the main beaches. Travellers coming overland from the Mekong Delta or Cambodia can cross by high-speed ferry. Once you are here, Grab, taxis, tours and rented scooters cover everything.
Flying to Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) lies in the south-west of the island near Duong To, roughly 10 km south of Duong Dong and close to Long Beach. Domestic airlines fly frequently from Ho Chi Minh City (about an hour) and Hanoi (about two hours), with fewer flights from other Vietnamese cities. International routes have included direct services from South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, mainland China, Singapore, Thailand and other Asian hubs, and seasonal flights from Russia and Central Asia. Routes change from season to season, so check current schedules.
By ferry from the Mekong Delta
High-speed passenger ferries link the island with two mainland ports. Most arrive at the port on Phu Quoc’s east coast, around half an hour by road from Duong Dong.
| Route | Crossing time (approx.) | Good for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rach Gia – Phu Quoc | About 2–3 hours | Travellers from Can Tho and the central Mekong Delta | High-speed ferries; car ferries are slower |
| Ha Tien – Phu Quoc | About 1.5 hours | Travellers from Cambodia, Ha Tien and the coast | The shortest sea crossing |
| Flight from Ho Chi Minh City | About 1 hour | Almost everyone | Many daily flights |
| Flight from Hanoi | About 2 hours | Northern Vietnam | Several daily flights |

Ferries are cancelled in bad weather, more often from May to October. Seats can be booked in advance — for example the express ferries from Rach Gia and Ha Tien — and it is wise to do so around Vietnamese holidays.

From Cambodia
The island’s north is only a few kilometres from the Cambodian coast, but there is no direct boat. Travellers from Kampot or Kep cross the land border near Ha Tien and take the ferry from there. Allow most of a day, and make sure your visa arrangements cover entering Vietnam by land.
Overland via the Mekong Delta
A two-day Mekong Delta tour from Ho Chi Minh City that ends on Phu Quoc is an alternative to flying, with a floating market on the way.
Getting around the island
- Grab and taxis: ride-hailing apps work on Phu Quoc, and metered and electric taxis are common around Duong Dong, Long Beach and the airport. Agree the fare or use the app for long trips to the north or south.
- Tours: most tours include hotel pickup, which removes most of the driving.
- Scooters: widely rented. You need a licence valid in Vietnam (normally a matching international permit plus your home licence) and travel insurance that covers it; helmets are compulsory. Traffic and sand on the road make the main roads tricky for beginners.
- Car with driver: a good choice for families or for a day exploring the north or south. Hotels and agencies arrange them.
- Buses and shuttles: there are some public bus routes and resort or attraction shuttles, but they are not a reliable way to see the island.
Distances and travel times
Roughly: Duong Dong to the airport 15–20 minutes; to An Thoi, Sunset Town and the cable car about 40 minutes; to Sao Beach 30–40 minutes; to Grand World, VinWonders and the Safari about 45 minutes; to Starfish Beach 45–60 minutes. Times are longer in the evening rush near Sunset Town and in heavy rain.

Combining Phu Quoc with Hanoi
The direct flights from Hanoi, about two hours, make Phu Quoc an easy beach finish to a trip through northern Vietnam — or a beach start before you head north. For the Old Quarter, street food and day trips from the capital, see our Hanoi travel guide.
