Sunset over the sea from Long Beach on Phu Quoc’s west coast

Long Beach (Bai Truong)

Twenty kilometres of west-facing sand

Long Beach (Bai Truong) runs for roughly twenty kilometres down the west coast from Duong Dong towards the south. The northern end near town is lively, with small hotels, bars and restaurants on the sand; further south the beach is lined with large international resorts, and between them there are still quiet stretches.

It faces west, so the sunsets over the Gulf of Thailand are spectacular. In the dry season, roughly November to April, the sea is usually calm and clear. From about May to October the southwest monsoon brings wind, waves and, at times, washed-up debris; that is when the east-coast beaches such as Sao Beach are a better bet.
